Situated 15 kilometers (9 miles) south of Brisbane’s central business district, Acacia Ridge offers a mix of residential and industrial spaces. The suburb falls under the local government area of the City of Brisbane and is well-connected to the city center.

Acacia Ridge is primarily known for its residential character, with a landscape that has been shaped by the post-World War II era. Established to provide housing for returning servicemen and their families, the suburb is adorned with original post-war dwellings that continue to stand proudly today.

Industrial Heritage and Development

A defining feature of Acacia Ridge is its heavy industrial area, particularly in the eastern part of the suburb, east of Beaudesert Road. This industrial presence has played a pivotal role in shaping the identity of Acacia Ridge over the years.

One notable historical landmark is the former Holden vehicle manufacturing plant, which operated in Acacia Ridge from 1966 until the mid-1980s. The plant produced iconic models such as the Holden Gemini before closing its doors in 1984. Afterward, the site evolved into a regional distribution center for Woolworths, later transforming to serve the needs of an independent retail grocery chain.

On the opposite side of Beaudesert Road, Toyota established its southern Queensland regional headquarters, contributing to the industrial mosaic of the suburb. This site primarily handles managerial and distribution-related functions rather than vehicle production.

Educational Legacy and Community Institutions

The educational landscape of Acacia Ridge has seen transformation over the years. Cooper’s Plains Provisional School, which opened in 1869 and later became Cooper’s Plains State School, underwent a name change in 1956, becoming Acacia Ridge State School. The relocation of Acacia Ridge State School to Nyngam Street followed the closure of Acacia Ridge State High School in 1997.

In the realm of community services, the Murri School took over the Beaudesert Road site after the closure of Acacia Ridge State School in its original location.

Transportation Hub and Railway Freight Yards

Acacia Ridge serves as a crucial transportation hub with one of Queensland’s largest railway freight yards. Dealing with interstate freight, the railway yard handles the break-of-gauge from 1,067 mm to 1,435 mm. Notably, in 2008, the Beaudesert Road level crossing was replaced by an overbridge, expanding the sidings in the yard to accommodate longer trains.

The suburb’s strategic location led to the conversion of the railway line between Acacia Ridge and Bromelton to dual gauge in 2009, facilitating the establishment of another break-of-gauge freight hub at Bromelton in 2017.
